Thankfully, we’re here to debunk the most misleading claims and ensure your skin gets the sun protection it deserves.  Myth #1: If the sun’s not out, you don’t need to wear sunscreen.  If the sun’s hiding behind clouds, rain, snow, or any other less-than-sunny weather, its UV rays can still reach your skin. Clouds can actually reflect and amplify UV rays, making them more dangerous for your skin.  Myth #2: It doesn’t matter how much SPF you use.  Not quite—most of us need at least SPF 30 for comprehensive sun protection, which blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays. And while the difference between SPF 30 and 50 is minimal (SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB radiation), if you’re undergoing treatments that elevate skin’s sun sensitivity (like LED therapy), you may consider reaching for more robust protection. Keep in mind that no sunscreen can block 100% of UVB rays, as SPF 100 only offers 99% protection.  Myth #3: Broad-spectrum sunscreen is no different than other SPFs. When a sunscreen is labelled broad spectrum, it means that it shields your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Non-broad-spectrum products only protect against UVB radiation. While UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburns and associated with skin cancer, UVA rays are absorbed more deeply into the skin, contributing to skin aging and skin cancer.  Myth #4: You only need to apply sunscreen on your face to prevent signs of aging. Do you ever wonder what’s actually happening to your skin during your LED light therapy sessions? We asked our Scientific Advisory Board for a complete run-down on the details.  415nm Blue Light Treatment According to Dr. Fritz, “Blue light at 415nm is absorbed by porphyrins, which are naturally occurring molecules produced by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), the bacteria involved in acne. Porphyrins are particularly sensitive to blue light.”“When porphyrins absorb blue light, they become excited and undergo a photochemical reaction that produces reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS are toxic to the bacteria, effectively killing them. The decrease in P. acnes bacteria reduces the overall bacterial load on the skin, leading to fewer and less severe acne breakouts.” 633nm Red Light Treatment Red light therapy, on the other hand, penetrates more deeply into the skin, reaching the dermis layer. Dr. Fritz notes, “This deeper penetration allows red light to affect skin cells and tissues that blue light cannot reach. Red light is absorbed by chromophores in the mitochondria of skin cells. This absorption increases the activity of the mitochondria, boosting the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cells.”“Enhanced ATP production leads to increased cellular activity and regeneration. It also improves blood circulation in the treated areas. Better circulation means more oxygen and nutrients are delivered to the skin cells, aiding in the healing process and overall skin health.” Building Your Acne Treatment Plan: Lifestyle Adjustments to Prevent Breakouts In our chat with our Scientific Advisors, we asked if they recommended avoiding specific skincare ingredients, and treatments for acne-prone skin. Their tips can be incorporated into a well-rounded approach to acne, considering every aspect of your lifestyle and how it might impact your skin. According to Dr. Jagdeo, “It’s difficult to provide a generalized answer since everyone’s skin and acne is unique! Therefore, I always recommend seeing a board-certified dermatologist or other skin professional to develop a plan that’s right for you.”“Overall, if you have oily and acne-prone skin, you may find success opting for lighter weight products like a gel cream moisturizer instead of thicker creams and oils that could worsen clogged pores.” Skincare Ingredients to Avoid for Acne-Prone Skin Generally, people with acne-prone skin should steer clear of these ingredients in skincare: Comedogenic ingredients: If an ingredient is comedogenic (such as heavy oils like coconut oil or butters like cocoa or shea butter), it has the potential to clog your pores. Harsh scrubs: According to Dr. Fritz, “physical exfoliants with large, rough particles (e.g. walnut shells) can irritate the skin and worsen acne.” Additionally, over-exfoliation can cause irritation and inflammation, exacerbating existing breakouts. Your dermatologist can recommend an exfoliant (and exfoliation schedule) that best suits your skin. Fragrances and dyes “can be irritating and cause inflammation, leading to breakouts” notes Dr. Fritz. Closely examine the label before purchasing a skincare product, looking for fragrance aliases like perfume, parfum, scent, and cologne. Alcohol-based products: Dr. Fritz states: “Ingredients like SD alcohol and denatured alcohol can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing it to produce more oil and potentially leading to more breakouts. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) can be harsh on the skin, causing irritation and dryness.” Skin Treatments to Avoid for Acne-Prone Skin Certain treatments can cause more harm than good for acne-prone skin. Dr. Fritz suggests keeping clear from aggressive facials and extractions, which can trigger more inflammation than they’re worth. He also recommends avoiding oil-based makeup and heavy creams and ointments, which can block pores and lead to acne.  Is LED Light Therapy Right for My Acne? All Omnilux LED devices are medical-grade, FDA-cleared, CE-certified, and TGA-approved. They’re also backed by extensive clinical research supporting their safety and efficacy. So, while Omnilux LED light therapy is proven to be safe, it may not work for more severe forms of acne.“I recommend blue and red LED light therapy for people with mild to moderate inflammatory acne (think red, pus-filled pimples). If this is not sufficient, in most patients, topical creams with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide are very helpful. Systemic medication with pills that need to be [taken] orally [are] only necessary in very severe cases.”“At all levels of severity, light therapy helps to reduce the inflammation and can reduce the dose or the duration of medication and helps to maintain and prevent new acne flares.” Busting Common Acne Myths Fact or fiction? With the plethora of acne tips floating around social media today, it can be difficult to tell the difference. Our advisors offer clarity in the sea of online information. “Do not believe the myths, false ideologies, and other rubbish you find a million times on social media,” said Dr. Fritz. “Always be aware that a case report on improvement [with] a certain treatment does not automatically mean that you will improve as well. Medication is safe only if it has been tested for affectivity on hundreds of patients and has been proven not to cause side effects.”Dr. Jagdeo adds: “I think when folks don’t consult an expert, we often see them trying too many harsh active ingredients at once and ultimately end up irritating their skin and causing more breakouts. I know it’s tempting to try as many products as possible to clear your acne, but a simple skincare routine is often best!” With those key insights in mind, let’s debunk a few common acne myths in honor of Acne Awareness Month:Myth #1: Washing your face repeatedly throughout the day helps with acne. The truth: Washing your face more than twice daily can strip your skin of its natural oils, which play an essential role in the skin’s protective barrier. If this barrier is compromised, it can actually exacerbate acne by causing further irritation and inflammation.Drying out your skin by over-washing can also make your skin produce more oil in an attempt to shield itself from environmental stressors. These oils can combine with bacteria and dead skin cells to clog your pores.Myth #2: Acne is always a sign of poor hygiene. The truth: Acne (especially inflammatory acne) can be triggered by a vast range of factors, including genetics, hormones, age, and environmental factors. It’s far more complicated than hygiene, and many people with strict cleansing routines still struggle with breakouts.Myth #3: Only teenagers get acne. The truth: If only this one were true! Alas, adult acne is extremely common. Hormonal fluctuations and age-related skin changes can trigger acne in your 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s – even if you were acne-free throughout adolescence. Myth #4: The more products, the better.The truth: You heard Dr. Jagdeo: Oftentimes, simple is best. Using too many skincare products (especially products with active ingredients for acne) can dry out and irritate your skin. Additionally, certain ingredients can deactivate each other (like retinol and benzoyl peroxide), sabotaging the touted benefits of your acne treatments. What to Look for in an LED Mask

Not all devices are created equally, and it’s crucial to find a device that’s optimized to treat your particular skin concerns and to be effective.Below, we’ll go over the qualities to look for in an LED mask so you can trust your purchase (and see real, long-lasting results). 1. Wavelength Wavelength is the first factor to consider in your LED mask search. There are many different wavelengths on the electromagnetic light spectrum, and not all of them can benefit the skin. While some wavelengths are clinically proven to improve specific skin concerns, others can actually harm the skin. Dr. Jagdeo notes:“A combination of red and near-infrared light, such as those in the Omnilux devices, is ideal for treating mature skin. The red light (633nm) is proven to increase cellular energy which essentially kick starts cellular renewal to reduce inflammation, redness and correct pigmentation and photodamage. The near-infrared light (833nm) is where you’re going to see the most wrinkle-reducing benefit as this light penetrates much deeper into the skin to target fibroblast cells, which stimulate new collagen and elastin production for plumper, firmer and more youthful-looking skin.” 2. Clinical Research Many of the LED devices available today aren’t backed by clinical data to prove their safety and efficacy. As we mentioned above, it’s important to verify the legitimacy of any LED device with clinical studies before purchasing. Most LED devices on the market today do not have their own clinical data supporting their claims, so if you can’t find any clinical research to support the device, we wouldn’t recommend investing in it. Output, Intensity, and Proximity to Treatment Area Your skin must absorb the optimized wavelengths of light to reap the complete benefits of LED therapy. To ensure optimal absorption, consider the device’s output, intensity, and proximity to your skin. You can think about these factors like a flashlight shining on a wall – the closer you get to the wall, the brighter and more intense the light becomes.With this in mind, we recommend choosing an LED mask that’s constructed of flexible, medical-grade material, rather than a hard-shelled mask. This ensures that the device can mold around the curves of the treatment area and can absorb as much of the emitted light as possible. Hard-shell LED masks aren’t flexible and may leave areas of the face untreated, leading to uneven results. The device straps are also important considerations, as flimsy or poorly positioned straps can effect the fit of the device to the treatment area. All Omnilux LED products use medical-grade, flexible silicone, and our face masks are equipped with two adjustable straps (one along the crown of the head, and one along the nape) allowing the LEDs to sit directly on the skin. This means that the masks deliver a high concentration of light at a lower output, providing safe, even results. 4. Number of LEDs More LEDs aren’t necessarily better in a light therapy device, as the irradiance in each LED bulb will spread across the skin. However, when the LEDs are positioned with too much space between them, it lowers the light concentration and may compromise the treatment results.A higher number of LEDs positioned with minimal space between them will facilitate more even results. Many LED devices on the market today are not agency-cleared and without clearance from the experts at the FDA (and international equivalents), you can’t be certain that a device is safe and effective for your skin. Therefore, we can’t recommend LED device brands that haven’t been cleared by the FDA.At Omnilux, safety and efficacy are of utmost importance. This Skincare Awareness Month, we’ve partnered with the AAD to support its Camp Discovery program to help kids with chronic skin disease thrive in a place where different is the norm. No judgment. No bullying. With direct support from their counselors, medical staff, and each other, campers gain greater confidence in their own skin as they build life-changing memories and a new community.We had the chance to interview dermatologist and medical director of Camp Discovery Connecticut, Dr. Karen Wiss, MD, and dermatologist and medical director of Camp Discovery Pennsylvania, Dr. Andrea Zaenglein, MD, about the program and how it’s helped make a difference in the lives of hundreds of campers over the last 30 years.Q. How and why did Camp Discovery get started?Dr. Wiss: The program was started in 1993 by a dermatologist, Dr. Mark Dahl who wanted to provide a summer camp experience for young people with chronic skin conditions. Dr. Zaenglein: Our camp in Pennsylvania was started a couple years later by Dr. Howard Pride with Annie Houser and the staff at Geisinger Medical Center.Q. Most of Camp Discovery’s counselors are volunteer dermatologists and nurses, why is it essential to have medical professionals on staff?Dr. Wiss: Some of the campers have significant skin care needs like blisters that need dressings during camp. Others have multiple allergies to foods that need to be avoided. Medical situations do come up during camp and it helps to have providers on site. For those of us who are medical professionals, it is important for us to live with our patients for a week and see what they experience on a daily basis. Q. What makes Camp Discovery unique?Dr. Zaenglein: Camp Discovery is most importantly a place where kids with skin disorders can just have a great week of fun. For many kids, it is also the first time they have met another child with the same skin condition, and it is important for them to know that they are not alone. For families of kids with more severe disorders, it is often the only camp opportunity where they can be assured the staff caring for their child is experienced and capable of performing necessary daily skin care routines. Q. What are some camp highlights?Dr. Zaenglein: At our camp in Pennsylvania, there are so many awesome activities going on every day from traditional camp offerings like fishing and archery to ziplining and rock climbing to tie dying and gimping (or boondoggling depending on where you are from). We all love going to the local amusement park, Knoebels, riding the "Skloosh" and eating ice cream.Q. How have you seen Camp Discovery transform over the years?Dr. Zaenglein: I have been camp Medical Director for over 20 years and I think the best thing about Camp Discovery is that it really has not changed that much over the years. The emphasis has always been on ensuring a fun traditional camp experience for the kids. No phones, no computers. Just fun and friends. It really is a magical place.Q. What is some of the feedback you’ve received from campers or parents after they’ve attended camp?Dr. Wiss: Campers – the one week they feel normal, they wish they could be at camp all year, they wish the rest of the world was like camp; Parents – life-changing, they made incredible friends, they no longer need counseling for their condition, they are more accepting of themselves. Q. Who would you recommend attend Camp Discovery?Dr. Zaenglein: I would recommend any child that has been impacted by their skin disease, mild to severe: kids that experience symptoms like chronic itching with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, children with intensive skin care routines like epidermolysis bullosa or ichthyosis. Really any child who has been emotionally impacted by their skin disease by feeling "different" from peers.
